Independent hedging advice that holds when markets move.
FinHedge Advisory is an independent balance sheet and risk transfer advisory firm. We help Nigerian oil and gas companies, corporates, development finance institutions and financial institutions manage currency, interest rate, commodity price and funding risk, and we take no execution margin, hold no inventory and have no dealer relationship to protect.
Why the firm exists
Access was never the constraint.
Nigerian institutions are managing the most consequential market transition in a generation: a liberalised currency, elevated rates, volatile commodity prices and a recapitalised banking sector. The instruments to manage it already exist: CBN-approved forwards, NDFs, options and swaps, cleared through FMDQ.
What is usually missing is not product. It is a board-approved policy, a disciplined process for applying it, and one voice in the room whose only interest is the client’s own risk position.
Your banks execute. We make sure it is the right hedge, at the right price.
How the work divides.
A hedge is priced with the bank’s margin built in. That is how dealers are paid, and it is entirely reasonable. What a client rarely has is an independent view of how large that margin is, and whether the hedge is the right one in the first place.
We provide that view: designing the strategy, running the competition between your banks, benchmarking what comes back, and overseeing execution carried out by your own counterparties. Our fee is the only money we make on your risk.
What we advise on
Three areas of advice. Each stands alone.
Clients engage us for one, and some add another. Where a recommendation has to be built, we can stay on and oversee the implementation.
Risk transfer and hedging
Currency, interest rate and commodity price risk: policy design, structuring, running the bank RFQ, and oversight of execution.
DetailBalance sheet and capital
Asset-liability management, liquidity and collateral, capital efficiency after recapitalisation, and treasury investment frameworks.
DetailMarkets capability building
Desk mandate, product capability, pricing and risk frameworks, from someone who has built a desk from a blank sheet.
DetailWhere a recommendation has to be built (treasury operating model, systems selection, controls and automation), we stay on to oversee the build.
DetailWho we advise
Institutions carrying risk they did not choose.
Oil and gas
Producers, marketers and service companies exposed to crude and product prices, dollar revenue against naira cost, and dollar-denominated debt.
Corporates
Manufacturers, FMCG and agri-businesses with imported inputs, foreign currency borrowing, export revenue or commodity-linked costs.
Development finance
DFIs managing the mismatch between hard currency borrowing and local currency lending, with governance a public-interest board can defend.
Financial institutions
Merchant and commercial banks, fintechs, insurers, pension fund administrators and asset managers.
The perimeter
What we do not do.
- We do not execute.
- We do not take positions.
- We do not sell product.
This is a deliberate perimeter, not a limitation we are working around. An adviser who also executes has an interest in the size and frequency of the trade. An adviser who warehouses risk has an interest in where the price settles. We have neither, which is the whole point of instructing us.
It also keeps the firm clearly on the advisory side of Nigeria’s regulatory boundaries. Where execution is required, it is carried out by your own banks or through DFI channels, and we supervise it on your behalf.
The Principal
Twenty-three years, mostly on the other side of the table.
Deji Adeniran began on the trading floor at Deutsche Bank, making markets in European equity index derivatives. At OTCex he founded the firm’s Sub-Saharan Africa fixed income business and built it from a blank sheet into a franchise generating multi-million dollar annual revenue.
The second half of his career was spent inside the machinery: Brexit entity build-out at Citi, front office controls at Credit Suisse, and an enterprise collateral optimisation programme at Bank of America. He knows how the price is made, and how the institution around it is supposed to be run.
The first conversation is a working session, not a sales call.
Bring the exposure, or the decision your board has in front of it. We reply within two working days with an honest view on whether we are the right people for it.
